Why does the search engine switch the order of entered words?

Question:

Why do the words put in the search box get rearranged in the results when searching the ‘uni site’ via myportal?  So, if I search ‘my portal’ the results come back, ‘portal my’.  Making the results nothing to do with what you searched for in the first place?

Answer:

If you are looking for a specific phrase, just typing it into any search engine will probably not get you the results you were hoping for. Search engines might bring back pages that have all the words you entered, but those words most likely will not be in the order you intended or even anywhere near each other. By using the words my and portal – you are instructing the search engine to search for the occurrence of these two words in any Staffordshire University document irrespective of how close together the two words are.

There are a number of techniques which can considerably improve search engine results. For example by using quotation marks around the phrase or terms eg. ‘my portal’ – the search engine will understand the command to force these two words together in order and by proximity.
Using the advance search option can help refine results even further – for example by date or by author or both.

Librarians are very happy to help in providing documents, guides and training to make the most of search engines see

Can job vacancies be posted on the RSS channels?

Question:

Please can we have a feed for the Uni Job Vacancies or post them up on one of the feeds as they become available?

Answer:

The current Job Vacancy link on the website was in interim measure pending the launch of a more streamlined online recruitment system and process.  It is anticipated that this new system will be launched early next year, which will enable staff to have vacancies emailed to them which may be of interest.  We will keep under review the need for an additional RSS feed as part of the plan for next year.

Does the University have an adverse weather policy?

Question:

Despite looking on the website, I can’t find the policy regarding adverse weather and attendance at university for staff affected.
Is this something that could be posted on the feed as I’m sure I can’t be the only member of staff that has been affected by this.

Answer:

The University does not have a specific policy regarding adverse weather preventing staff from attending work, as each case will be reviewed on an individual basis depending upon the circumstances.

Any member of staff unable to attend work due to adverse weather conditions should contact their Line Manager by telephone as soon as possible to explain their indivdual situation, who in turn will consult with Personnel Services to explore the options available when considering how the unexpected period of leave will be authorised.

Where can I find an up-to-date academic calendar?

Question:

Why is there never an up to date academic calendar available anywhere, but there are numerous out of date calendars available?

Answer:

The 2010/11 Academic Calendar can be viewed via the A-Z index on the University Home Page. While this is clearly relevant to current students and staff we recognize that former students sometimes need to consult the calendar from a previous year to answer specific queries. Therefore information relating to previous years is not removed immediately.

As a result of your observation we are reviewing where links to the calendar should appear. As I mention above, currently it is listed under the letter A in the A-Z. It is also accessible via the A2Z4U feature for students.

The 2011/12 Academic Calendar will appear shortly also.
