Conference Theme: Communication, Collaboration and Commitment


The conference committee is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Institute of Education Postgraduate Research Conference 2017. United under the theme of Communication, Collaboration and Commitment, the conference aims to bring together researchers from across the full range of sub-disciplines within education to provide a diverse and dynamic forum for the presentation of ideas. Whether you are seeking to disseminate research findings, develop your thinking about ongoing research, or expand your network, this postgraduate conference will offer a supportive and engaging environment in which to share your research.



We are excited to welcome Katy Vigurs to our conference this year. Katy is Associate Professor of Education at the University of Derby and during her career she has led many educational research projects with learners in school, college, university and adult education settings. Katy has also worked with families and learning providers, with a particular interest in the field of widening participation in education.


Conference Sub-themes:

Participants are invited to explore the full scope of the conference and we therefore welcome presentations and posters with a focus on the conference theme of Communication, Collaboration and Commitment which might also include the sub themes of:

  1.  Interdisciplinary research
  2. Educational Research Methods
  3. International studies
  4. Innovation in educational research

Abstract Submission:

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted to: by no later than Friday  8th September 2017.

Abstracts should include:

  1. Research aim(s) and/or research questions
  2. Research methodology
  3. Findings (if relevant)

‘International Public Health – Empowering communities for health improvement in Africa’

We are delighted to invite you to the first guest lecture of the Centre for Health and Development, CHAD.

CHAD is committed to ensuring that health equity research is relevant, accessible and meaningful to all.

Working in partnership with local agencies and communities, we aim to ensure that CHAD research is community-led and makes a difference to people’s lives.

Our guest speaker, Professor Aliko Ahmed is Director of Public Health England for East of England, and previously the Director of Public Health for Staffordshire NHS and County Council. During his time in Staffordshire he helped to establish CHAD.

He qualified in medicine, and trained in epidemiology and public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, and at the University of Cambridge.

He oversees the development and implementation of Public Health England programmes and activities in the East of England including the provision of technical advice and support to local governments and the NHS. His earlier global health experiences include extensive field work in infectious diseases and outbreak as a medical epidemiologist with MSF, advising and supporting national disease control programmes in Africa, and a key role in a large global programme that supported governments in low income countries to develop national mental health policies. He maintains a special interest in collaborative efforts towards sustainable health system solutions in Africa.

Creative Methods for Research and Community Engagement Summer School

6-8 July 2017, Keele University

PhD students and Early Career Researchers are welcome at this event organised by the Community Animation and Social Innovation Centre (CASIC) at Keele University.

The Summer School will be held in central England at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme (6-7 July) and Keele University campus (8 July), where you will experience the KAVE ( and our Makerspace facilities (

The facilitator will be Dr Helen Kara, author of Creative Research Methods in the Social Sciences: A Practical Guide. Speakers will include:

The Summer School will enlighten, inspire and guide ECRs and students at all stages of scholarly or professional doctorates. Each day will be packed with interactive hands-on sessions addressing six broad topics:

 Mixed-methods research

 Knowledge co-production

 Research using technology

 Writing creatively for research

We are offering an “early bird” price of £230 for bookings received and paid by 21 April. After that date the price will be £270. The cost includes refreshments and lunches and a complimentary copy of Dr Kara’s book on creative research methods.

There will be a dinner and performance of ‘Around the world in 80 Days’ at the New Vic Theatre on July 6th, at an extra cost of £20.

Early and Late Stage Review Workshop (for PhD students and supervisors)

Teaching training for Research Degrees Students

If you are a research degree student here at Staffordshire, and are doing some part-time teaching for us, then you are required to attend teaching training workshops, normally at no cost to you. The first step in this is the Teach Well workshops, the first date of which is Wednesday the 16th of November, 2016, 1030 to 1200 and the main, full day workshop on January 25th. In your second year, you should take the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher and Professional Education. For both, your first steps should be to contact
