On Nihilism

I’m sure you’d like to join me in congratulating Emma Cleary, who successfully defended her PhD thesis in her viva examination yesterday. Emma’s thesis is entitled ‘Jazz-shaped Bodies: Mapping City Space, Time, and Sound in Black Transnational Literature,’ and it’s fair to say that her examiners – Brian Jarvis (Loughborough) and Mark Brown (Staffs) – were very impressed. Emma’s work is based in literature, but she her readings also used elements of Michel Serres and Gaston Bachelard (particulary the idea of the instant).

A big ‘well done’ also goes to Lisa Mansell, who supervised the research.
