{"id":969,"date":"2017-10-18T11:28:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T11:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.staffs.ac.uk\/ecw\/?p=969"},"modified":"2017-10-18T11:28:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T11:28:27","slug":"man-booker-winner-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.staffs.ac.uk\/ecw\/2017\/10\/18\/man-booker-winner-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Man Booker Winner Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Man Booker prize has been won by an experimental first novel that was 5 years in the writing. <em>Lincoln in the Bardo<\/em> is written from the perspective of Abraham Lincoln\u2019s dead son and a host of other souls speaking from a limbo between life and death (the Tibetan belief of Bardo).<\/p>\n<p>In interviews today Saunders has spoken about how the structure of the book \u2013 with dozens of narrative voices \u2013 has been a significant challenge, and how literature has the power to see the world from the perspective of others. Interestingly, President Trump is very proud of how few books he has read! Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>Writing about his own creative practice in the <em>Guardian<\/em> recently, he said \u2018An artist works outside the realm of strict logic. Simply knowing one\u2019s intention and then executing it does not make good art. Artists know this. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/3228\/donald-barthelme-the-art-of-fiction-no-66-donald-barthelme\">Donald Barthelme<\/a>: \u201cThe writer is that person who, embarking upon her task, does not know what to do.\u201d\u00a0\u2026.
