PHILIP ASTLEY AND THE STORY OF CIRCUS For World Circus Day. Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Philip Astley (1742-1814) was the father of modern Circus. We chart his career using historical documents and illustrations – then bring it up-top-date via archive film from over the past century. Part of the launch for the Astley celebrations in 2017.
