Community Open Day April 2016

We are excited to have Jim from the BBC’s Great Pottery Thrown Down with us on Saturday 23rd April.

 At 11am and 11:30am Jim will be giving a talk and pottery demonstration.
At 1pm we will have live music from Jim with his band Slim Jim and the Wildcards.
During the day you can take part in lots of FREE activities:

10-3
  • have a campus tour starting from the Science Centresports centre activities
  • hear a University talk on a wide range of subjects – book in at the Science Centre
  • view plans & find out more about developments on campus in the Science Centre
  • grab a bite to eat or a drink in the Coalport Community Garden
  • take part in Charity Sports competition and see activity demos in the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre

10.30 – 12.30 take a Labyrinth Walk with Prof Bernard Moss in the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre Sports

  • learn about the Big Read summer literacy programme
  • find out how you can get involved in local community action with UniQ CAN

Hear a lecture on “Literature on Your Doorstep – Stoke-in-Print with Dr Catherine Burgass in room B169 in the Brindley building

Fringe Festival 2013

Fringe Festival 2013 was a mammoth 4 weeks long and
more than 1000 people took part!

photo of big blue girl puppetFringe 2013 ended with the Fantastic Fringe Finale. The fun began with a community parade at 11am featuring costume, live music and the Blue Girl puppet made by B Arts. The Finale attracted around 500 people, mostly from the local community. A visitor to four Fringe events said, “Congrats on a fantastic Fringe festival….loved the parade!”

 

photo of Indian dancersThe sun shone on the Brazilian drumming, street acrobatics and puppetry activities and the BBQ sold out. The College Rd site was buzzing with face painting, balloon modelling, peace rope making, story-making, Indian dance, rice art, community recipes, computing, henna art and International games led by volunteers.The Film Theatre was crowded for animations made by local children and young people and a family feature film.

Show and Tell 2014Student guides gave regular Degree Show tours to many people who have never set foot on University land before, but live two streets away. This year’s Art and Design Degree Show opens to the public on the 14th June 2014.

photo of mums and children with feather headressess in community paradeB Arts are our main Festival partner again, running kite making and animation workshops in Shelton over the next few weeks. Get involved and you can take part in the community parade and activities at the Fantastic Fringe Finale this year on the 21st June.

 

In photo of people with camera obscura2013 the Amazing Camera Obscura was open for three days attracting more than 300 people including many school and college students and passing visitors. The most common response to it was “wow!”. David Noble’s talk on Friday evening took the camera obscura as its inspiration and attracted 35 people, who found it “both affirming and inspirational!”

Look out for David’s photography talk this year, “In the Garden with Darwin” on the 19th June.

photo of auctioneerThanks to staff and students from the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies who donated over 40 home made art postcards for the Anonymous Postcard exhibition and auction. In 40 minutes we raised £170.00 in aid of North Staffs MIND and The Samaritans!

Over 80 University students and staff from every department got involved in Fringe 2013. We worked with more than 30 local organisations and it is this partnership working which makes all the difference. Find out about our Partners for 2014.
