Book yourself on a free workshop to celebrate National Youth Work Week 2012

The Creative Communities Unit are hosting a This is Youth Work workshop led by Bernard Davies and Pauline Grace of the In Defence of Youth Work Campaign on Thursday 7th February 2013.

As youth workers across the UK celebrate National Youth Work Week 2012, the question of ‘what is youth work?’ is as complex as ever.  Youth work has be significantly affected by  recent austerity measures and as such, some youth workers have become isolated and their roles have changed.  Youth work promotes voluntary participation and avoiding labelling young people, but where does that leave youth workers whose roles are taking them into more ‘targeted’ approaches of youth work or those who can only get funding to work with young people who can be identified as having or being a ‘problem’?

Youth workers need a opportunity to explore and debate the new realities in which we find our profession.  We need an opportunity to build networks, to share ideas and strengthen our sector.  To help us to do this we are hosting a ‘This is Youth Work’ workshop on 7th February 2013, led by Bernard Davies and Pauline Grace of the In Defence of Youth Work Campaign to offer youth workers (even if you do not have ‘youth worker’ in your job title), and managers of youth work an opportunity to explore the topic of youth work in the current political context.  It is based on the ‘This is Youth Work: Stories from Practice’ book and DVD which were published in October 2011 which are available to download at http://www.indefenceofyouthwork.org.uk/wordpress/?page_id=837. The workshop will use participative methods to explore, analyse and debate youth work and its place and possibilities currently.

To say a little thank you for the work you do we are also inviting participants to come along to a free lunch and an opportunity to network prior to the workshop.  Organisations are also welcome to bring along promotional materials and to have a small stall to promote their work. Please book to reserve your place.

Don’t miss this opportunity to take part in a workshop led by a leading and influential thinker and campaigner in youth work.
