Horizon scanning research and intelligence centre

Funding aims to designate and fund a single NIHR horizon scanning research and intelligence centre that will act as a centre of excellence in provision of advanced notice to national policymakers of key new emerging health technologies. Distinguished visiting fellowships

Mair scholarship

This enables occupational health nurses to undertake learning and development activities such as postgraduate studies or professional short courses in order to enhance patient care, patient experience and development in nursing practice. Knowledge transfer partnerships

Innovate UK, GB

These aim to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, technology and skills, and help businesses innovate and grow, by linking them with a university and a graduate. Partnerships may last between six months and three years. SMEs must contribute a third of the project costs, usually around £20,000, whereas large companies must contribute 50 per cent of the costs, usually around £30,000.

Skills development fellowships – expertise at the social science interface

Medical Research Council, GB

These support training for very early career researchers in, or individuals changing disciplines to, the areas of health economics and mixed methods research. Joint call for European cooperation

Interreg Europe, EU

Funding for higher education in England for 2016-17: HEFCE grant letter from BIS

On March 4th the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Minister for Universities and Science have confirmed funding allocations to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for financial year 2016-17.

The grant letter sets out government funding and priorities for HEFCE and for higher education for the coming year. It confirms funding of £3.7 billion, including capital funding of £478 million.

Open knowledge exchange fellowships

Natural Environment Research Council, GB

These enable the sharing and flow of knowledge and expertise between the NERC-funded researchers and their user communities. The fellowships will cover 100 per cent of the fellow’s salary on a pro-rata basis including superannuation, national insurance and specific allowances, in addition up to £40,000 is available for travel and other associated costs. Awards can be between one and three years in duration.

Industry fellowships

These enable academic scientists to work on collaborative projects with industry, or individuals employed in industry to work on collaborative projects with university departments or non-profit research organisations. Centre for doctoral training – modelling and quantitative skills in ecology and evolution

Professorship/ Associate Professorship Call 2016 – March 9th Advisory Session

To support the Professorship/Associate Professorship call announced in January, Dr Steve Wyn Williams will run an advisory session to guide prospective applicants on the conferment process and criteria.

The session will be held on Wednesday 9th March at 11.00am in the Cadman Executive Boardroom, Cadman Building, Stoke-on-Trent.

The session will run for two hours. In order to ensure that there is sufficient time for questions and discussion, attendance will be capped at 25 members of staff. If necessary an additional session will be arranged before 4th April deadline for applications.

Places must be booked and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To book a place, please email your request to researchservices@staffs.ac.uk no later than 4th March 2016.

Bridging Business and Research Event in Cardiff – March 18th

marie_curie_logoThe event is part of the Europe wide campaign to promote business-academic collaborations under the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and will take place in Cardiff on Friday 18 March 2016. Whilst the main objective of the event is to encourage more involvement from the private sector in MSCA projects, the line-up of expert speakers from the European Commission, large industry, SMEs, public sector and academia will deliver an insightful programme, exploring the theme of bridging business and research more widely. Facilitated question and answer sessions and networking time are also included in the event’s Programme.

Supporting a culture of openness in the NHS – a policy evaluation

Erasmus for young entrepreneurs

The EU Referendum Debate and its Impact on UK Universities 29 February 2016 –

​Universities for Europe is hosting the first in a series of different debates on the EU referendum and its impact on British universities on 29 February 2016 at the Chelsea College of Arts.
An international panel of experts will meet to discuss the value of European Union membership for universities, its impact on collaboration and competitiveness, and the potential implications of the UK referendum for future collaboration.

Transnational organised crime – cross-disciplinary innovation awards

The Economic and Social Research Council, in collaboration with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, under the partnership for conflict, crime and security research programme, invites applications for its transnational organised crime call. This funds innovative research and networking activities which address transnational organised crime, from a range of cross-disciplinary approaches and research perspectives. Applications from collaborative work between social scientists and arts or humanities researchers, working where appropriate with engineers and physical scientists, are welcome. The following topics will be considered:

•the illegal movement of people, goods and money across international borders;

•human trafficking and illicit trafficking of arms and drugs;

•cross-border money laundering, bribery, corruption and financing of criminal and terrorist networks;

•cyber enabled crime;

•international art, conservation and heritage crime;

•transnational sexual exploitation, and trade in counterfeit identities and goods.

Applications which explore linkages with other PaCCS themes will also be considered.

Collaborations with researchers and stakeholders beyond the UK is strongly encouraged reflecting the international nature of organised crime.

Awards are worth £100,000 each, at full economic cost, for a duration of 18 months. The council expects to fund approximately 10 projects.

Schools finance health competition

Innovate UK, GB

Funding supports phase two projects that aim to develop and evaluate prototypes or demonstrators, which offer practical solutions to enable improved financial health and efficiency savings in schools, without harming outcomes for pupils. The total budget for phase two is £200,000, including VAT. Each project may receive up to £100,000 over a maximum period of one year.
