Capacity Building Projects in Higher Education

The European Commission will be launching the first call for the new Erasmus+ scheme Capacity Building Projects in Higher Education in autumn.

The Capacity Building Projects in Higher Education scheme replaces the former TEMPUS programme. Staffordshire University has considerable success with this scheme and acted as partner and lead organisations on projects.

Capacity-building projects are transnational cooperation projects, based on multilateral partnerships, primarily between higher education institutions from Programme and eligible Partner Countries.

The partner countries from outside the EU can include:

  • the EU’s neighbouring countries,
  • Russia,
  • EU candidate and potential candidate countries,
  • Latin America,
  • Asia,
  • Africa-Caribbean-Pacific countries.

Projects will have to involve at least three universities from three different Programme countries and two universities per Partner country involved.

There are two strands to this scheme, joint projects and structural projects. The joint projects will be of most interest to the university.

Joint projects operate at micro level and target higher education institutions in the eligible Partner Countries specifically.

They aim to modernise and reform higher education institutions through activities such as:

  • Developing new curricula or improving existing ones;
  • Improving governance and management systems;
  • Building relationships between higher education institutions and relevant socio-economic actors.

Time from the call opening to the deadline is often tight. There is not much chance to find partners and write the bid. This is a good time to start thinking about whether you are interested in applying and talking to potential partners to collaborate with.

The grant is intended to support the following costs related to the implementation of the project:

  • Staff costs
  • Travel costs and costs of stay
  • Equipment costs
  • Other direct and indirect costs.

Factsheet on Knowledge Alliances fund under Erasmus+

The European Commission are encouraging Higher Education institutions to work in partnership with businesses on innovative projects that address teaching and learning. The projects are expected to generate long term partnerships which develop entrepreneurship.

The funding is called Knowledge Alliances and is part of the Erasmus+ scheme. Although the deadline for 2014 has recently closed, it takes time to develop a strong consortium and project idea. The External Projects Team is encouraging staff to get thinking on project ideas for 2015. To help have we have created a factsheet giving an overview of the fund.

It is expected that the 2015 deadlines will be in March/April, with calls coming out around November 2014.

Erasmus + Event

The External Projects Team led a workshop this week in the Ashley Centre, over 25 staff from across the institution attended to hear about the new EU funding programme for education and youth, ERASMUS+. This new programme replaces the old Life Long Learning Programme as well as Erasmus Mundus, Tempus, Asia Link, Youth in Action and Edulink. The team were joined by our Erasmus Co-ordinator Deb Graddon who shared the latest news on our Key Action 1 bid (mobility of staff and student from SU) and Abdel Hamid Soliman who gave a great overview of a current Erasmus Mundus project PEACE.

Introduction to Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the new EU Programme for education, training, youth and sport. Staffordshire University are running an Erasmus+ workshop on Wednesday 9 April 9:30-12:30. The new programme presents an excellent source of funding to develop a variety of projects in partnership with organisations across Europe. The workshop will be an opportunity to gain a better understanding of what activities can be carried out so we can ensure the Universities capitalises on this new resource.

 

Erasmus+ Started on 1 January 2014 and will run till 2020. The programme supports activities in education, training, youth and sport across all sectors of lifelong learning including Higher Education, Further Education, adult education, schools and youth activities.

 

The deadlines for the 2014 calls are coming up in the next few weeks. This workshop is timed to get people thinking ahead to the 2015 calls.

 

The workshop will be in the LT114/116, Ashley Building, Stoke. Members of staff from all faculties are encouraged to attend. To book a place please email exteranlfundingofficer@staffs.ac.uk

Erasmus + calls now launched

The successor of the Life Long Learning Programme, Erasmus + has now published its first calls for proposals. Staffordshire University has successfully applied for the “Erasmus Charter” a pre requisite of applying for the programme and there are now open calls. A summary of these can be found with indicative budgets and call deadlines below.

UK National Agency for Erasmus+

Erasmus+, the new European programme for education, training, youth and sport will have a national agency to manage certain aspects of the funding. The previous Lifelong Learning Programme was run by both Ecorys and the British Council. They have teamed up together to bid for the new Erasmus+ contract and been successful.

In the Lifelong Learning Programme, there were a range of smaller funds which were applied to via the National Agency rather than to the European Commission. This will be the same in Erasmus+ only now the two agencies will be providing the support together.

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills estimates that the new Erasmus+ programme will be worth Euros 940 million to the UK between 2014 and 2020. It is expected to increase opportunities for international study, teaching and volunteering across Europe.

This is subject to final contractual agreements and approval by the European Commission. But it is expected they will start operating on 1 January 2014.

Getting up to Speed on European Funding

Special guest, Eevi Laukkanen, will be coming to Staffordshire University on 11 December 2013. Eevi is from UKRO in Brussels and will be talking about the new European funding streams being launched in January 2014.

The new funds include:

  • Horizon 2020, the replacement for FP7 which funds research and innovation
  • Erasmus+, funding education and vocational training scheme.

 

Horizon 2020 is the EU funding programme for research and innovation. The official start for the programme is 1 January 2014. There are opportunities for individual researchers and groups of researchers to apply for funding.

Erasmus+ consolidates education and vocational training schemes into one programme, with the addition of Sport. Erasmus+ will replace the Lifelong Learning Programme, Youth in Action, Erasmus Mundus, ALFA III, TEMPUS EDULINK in one over-arching scheme.

The Universities External Projects Team will be hosting the event in the Ashley Building Stoke. We do not have full details of the schedule yet, but for now we would like you to save the date in your diary.

Sneak Preview of the 2014 Erasmus+ Work Programme

The External Projects Team has access to a draft work programme for the new Erasmus+ Project. This is European funding for education, vocational education and young people.
The official document is expected to come out in January 2014, with call deadline dates shortly after. Reading the draft programme can give staff the opportunity to get ahead of the game and start planning partnerships.
The programme covers one year of funding. It gives an overview of the Erasmus+ programme, particularly the specific objectives in education and training, youth and sport as well as in:
•    Key action 1 (learning mobility of individuals)
•    Key action 2 (co-operation for innovation and the exchange of good practices)
•    Key action 3 (support for policy reform)
•    Jean Monnet activities
•    Sport

The draft work programme gives an overview of the funding allocations for 2014-2020 as well as a detailed budget for the 2014 calls.

The draft work programme also lists the topics of the specific activities, outlining an overview of the topic, the expected results, eligible applicants, award criteria and budget distribution per sector for 2014.
