SME Funding Event

Enterprise and Commercial Development  were joined yesterday by our UK Research Office (UKRO) representative Blazej Thomas and National Contact Point (NCP) for SME Innovation, Dr Jane Watkins as well as Mudlark owner Charles Hunter for an interactive session on European Funding and SME’s.

The all day event, sponsored by EUREKA and hosted by the External Projects Team was held in the Ashley Building, and was designed to stimulate discussion and debate on the routes to EU Horizon 2020 funding for SME’s and local organisations as well as providing insight to academics on funding opportunities within the programme. Over 50 attendees had the opportunity to listen to expert advice as well as question our speakers on the nuts and bolts of European funding.

Be a Part of European Funding

The External Projects team’s annual UK Research Office (UKRO) event is on Thursday November 20th, LT114/116 Ashley Building, Stoke. This is our opportunity to hear the latest EU research funding news from our Brussels based UKRO representative Blazej Thomas.

9:00-10:30 –SME involvement- how researchers can work with businesses and other non-academic sectors under the different Horizon 2020 programmes

10:30-12:00 –Marie Sklodowska Curie funding. An overview of the fund, what we can do with it and the level of detail required for an application

12:00-16:30 – Information and Networking session for Businesses and University Staff Businesses interested in getting involved with European funded projects are invited to come to the University to find out how the programmes work and talk to academics about how they can collaborate on projects. The University has lead and partnered on many European projects. It is a great way for businesses to develop their European networks and to get funding to develop a new idea to improve your business. This event is free and includes lunch.

12:00-16:30 –One to One Sessions Book a one to one session with our European specialist to get inside knowledge on developing your European Project. Get individual advice on which conferences to attend to meet people, which EU policies you should be focusing on, how to find partners, how to develop your bid and more.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND Seminar

In its capacity as UK National Contact Point for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, UKRO is pleased to announce a seminar on the Horizon 2020 COFUND scheme. COFUND offers co-funding for new or existing regional, national and international programmes to open up to:

  • International, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research training; and
  • Transnational and cross-sectoral mobility of researchers at all stages of their career.

COFUND in Horizon 2020 has a new element to it, as there are now two funding streams: one supporting experienced researchers through a ‘Fellowship programme’ and the second supporting early stage researchers through a ‘Doctoral programme’.
The first COFUND call under Horizon 2020 is due to open on 10 April 2014, with a deadline for proposals on 2 October 2014.

Seminar format

This seminar aims to provide participants with a better understanding of the COFUND scheme and its requirements, including the new doctoral training option. The seminar will combine discussion on the objectives of COFUND and its fit within the wider postgaduate researcher training landscape in the UK, along with practical information on proposal preparation, submission and finances. The seminar will also feature a case study from previous successful COFUND applicants.
The event will run from 10.30 to 16.00, with a lunch break. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

Overview of European Funding

UKRO The University is a subscriber to the UK Research Office (UKRO). This specialises in European funding and events. You can subscribe for emails when funding calls and events are open in your research area.

To join use this link http://ims.ukro.ac.uk/UKRO/login.aspx and click on the option ‘If you do not yet have a profile’. The site will use your email address to identify you are a member of staff at Staffordshire University and give you free access to it. You subscribe to emails using the ‘My Profiles’ section at the top of the page.

Erasmus+ The Erasmus+ programme will run from 2014-2020 and supports activities in education, training, youth and sport across all sectors of lifelong learning including Higher Education, Further Education, adult education, schools and youth activities.

Erasmus+ aims to boost skills and employability as well as modernise education, training, and youth work across Europe. It will provide opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad and will also support transnational partnerships between education, training and youth organisations, as well as support grassroots sport projects

Horizon 2020 is the EU funding programme for research and innovation, which will run from 2014 to 2020. UKRO have created the diagram below giving an overview of the different funding strands. Factsheets on H2020

Following the launch of the new European Horizon 2020 funding programme last week, UKRO have made factsheets for each of the new strands. You can access these by logging onto their site http://www.ukro.ac.uk/subscriber/funding/Pages/index.aspx.

The diagram below outlines the funding areas which are covered by H2020. URKO has factsheets for each of these topics. You can click on the diagram to enlarge it.

To be able to access this information, you will need to sign up for an UKRO account if you do not have one already. Alternatively, you can contact the External Projects Team requesting which factsheets you require and we can send them out.

The University has a high level of success in applying for European funding. If you have not been involved with an EU project before a good place to start might be to look at small funds that can help you meet other European partners. If you already have potential European links, a good place to start is by being a partner on a project.

UKRO and H2020 is now Launched!!

Hurrah!! At last all of the next Horizon 2020 proposals have been released. Following a great UKRO session yesterday with Eevi from the Brussels office (see pic below) the External Projects Team hosted a great day long programme of presentations on Erasmus + and the H2020 calls. We have been anticipating the launch which happened yesterday and we are now in the process of producing briefing sheets to help you to digest all of the information, but in the meantime you can access all of the latest info from the Commission HERE

Over €400 billion agreed by the European Parliament

The European Parliament had a busy week last week approving over €400 billion support measures for regional development, research and innovation, lifelong learning, cultural and media European collaboration activities.  The legislative packages for the following programmes have now been agreed by the European Parliament for the 2014 – 2020 programme period:

Horizon 2020 – €70.2 billion for research and innovation (Draft Horizon 2020 work programmes are now available via the European Commission website at http://ec.europa.eu/research/horizon2020/index_en.cfm?pg=h2020-documents. )

Cohesion Policy – €325 billion for growth and job creation through European Regional Development Fund; the European Social Fund; the Cohesion Fund; the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development; and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. 

Erasmus+ – €14.7 billion for lifelong learning, focussing on student and staff mobility through strategic partnerships.

Creative Europe – €1.4 billion for supporting European culture, media and arts sectors

Getting up to Speed on European Funding

Book your place on Staffordshire University’s annual workshop, Getting up to Speed on European Funding.

Special guest, Eevi Laukkanen, will be coming to Staffordshire University on 11 December 2013. Eevi is from UKRO in Brussels and will be talking about the new European funding streams being launched in January 2014.

The event will be held in LT113 Ashley. There are three open sessions which staff are invited to book on onto:

9:30-11:55 Welcome to Horizon 2020, LT113 Ashley, Stoke
• Horizon 2020, the replacement for FP7 which funds research and innovation

12:10-13:00 Discovering Erasmus+, LT113 Ashley, Stoke
• Erasmus+, funding education and vocational training scheme
