Wellcome: Humanities and social science research bursaries

The Wellcome Trust invites applications for its humanities and social science research bursaries. These support small and medium-scale research projects based on library or archive collections supported by the trust. Projects must focus either on Wellcome library holdings or on any collection supported by a previous research resources grant, but they need not be historically grounded.

Applicants must be based in, or travelling to, the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applications are not limited to academic researchers and may be submitted by conservators, artists, performers, broadcasters, writers, public engagement practitioners and others working in the creative arts. Experienced researchers in established academic posts will normally be expected to have some publications in an appropriate field and early-career researchers holding no posts are expected to possess a doctorate or clinical qualification and to have established a research interest in biomedical science, the humanities or social sciences.

Bursaries are usually worth between £5,000 and £25,000, depending on the duration of research, and may contribute towards travel, accommodation, subsistence and photocopying costs.

Funding for : Research for health in humanitarian crises

The Department for International Development and the Wellcome Trust, via Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance, invite expressions of interest for their call for research for health in humanitarian crises. Funding supports collaborative projects that aim to improve health outcomes by strengthening the evidence base for public health interventions in humanitarian crises. This call is particularly seeking proposals on the following topics:

•communicable diseases, including epidemics;

•sexual and reproductive health or gender-based violence;

•cost effectiveness of health interventions;

•ethical issues in the context of public health operations or research during humanitarian crises.

All applications must involve at least one research institute and one humanitarian actor working in partnership. Only consortium applications are eligible, with lead applicants being legally registered research institutions, non-profit institutions, nongovernmental institutions, a UN agency, or public or governmental institutions. Private sector organisations may be project partners but may not act as lead applicants. Proposals must be submitted in English.

Projects may receive funding within the following two categories: core grants, which involves a two-stage application process and is the principal mechanism for funding research; rapid response grants, which fund research on public health interventions in the acute phase of a crisis.

The annual budget is worth approximately £2 million. Seed funding of up to £10,000 per project may be awarded to cover travel and other costs associated with bringing the various project partners together and to collect preliminary data to support the proposal.

Wellcome Trust: Sustaining Health awards

The Wellcome Trust Strategic Plan includes a specific challenge in the area of ‘connecting environment, nutrition and health’ – seeking deeper insights into the issues at stake and develop strategies to mitigate the risks to human health.  This embraces the research themes of

  • behaviour change
  • global nutrition
  • health impacts of climate change
  • ecological public health

Public health is seriously threatened by a lack of access to nutritious food, clean water and sanitation, by poor air quality, and by environmental (including climate) change. These interlinked dangers are developing in parallel with dietary choices and lifestyles that are contributing to an unprecedented burden of obesity and chronic diseases.

This call aims to stimulate the formation of creative partnerships that bring together the diversity of competences required to tackle these complex problems and inform the global response through multidisciplinary research.
