Review: The Pavilion Smokehouse on Valentine’s Day!

Spacious and bright café by day, cosy and inviting restaurant by night – the Pavilion Smokehouse, located in the Beacon building, is fantastic.

On Valentine’s Day 2018, I was lucky enough to be invited along to sample the menu, and I was not disappointed. In fact, the selection was so yummy that I couldn’t decide between the crispy fish fillet or the juicy buttermilk chicken burger, but I chose the latter as it had been recommended to me more than once.

I made the right choice.

The chicken was deliciously succulent inside but crispy outside, with the perfect amount of chipotle mayonnaise and lettuce on a light bun. I enjoyed every moment of it…but this was not the first thing I ate.

The SLAW. Oh my goodness, the slaw. I have never tasted such beauty in an often forgotten and uneaten side dish, and I actually couldn’t stop myself finishing that before I even started on the burger or fries! If you like slaw – you HAVE to try this one!

The fries were also delicious, especially if you’re a fan of McDonald’s, as they’re crispier but without as much salt, so you’re tricked into thinking it’s healthier and can enjoy it blissfully.

Now, to rave about the restaurant itself and the service. The members of staff that work at the Pavilion Smokehouse are second-to-none in their professionalism and friendly attitude. I felt so light and happy when I’d left because it felt like I’d been wanted there, rather than just being another face in a sea of customers. In fact, I would go as far as to say if you like dining alone or find yourself unable to go with anyone else, the atmosphere is so welcoming here that you’d feel completely comfortable doing just that, as a few people did the evening I ate there. One such solo diner was actually a balloon-animal man, and gifted me a balloon penguin on his way out after his meal. I named him Smokey in honour of this fantastic establishment, which is right in the middle of campus by the way – no bus tickets or taxi fares to eat in Hanley!

Overall, if you’re looking for somewhere to eat, with quality food, at affordable prices, with a chilled-out vibe, then the Pavilion Smokehouse is the place for you!
