Enabling Cultures and Diversity in Research Management and Administration


The 21st annual conference of the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) is taking place in Leiden (Belgium) 28th June – 1st July 2015.

EARMA represents the community of Research Managers and Administrators (RM&As) in Europe, with members from the industry, academia, the public and private sectors. EARMA works with the EU Commission, national and international funding agencies, and provides a networking forum, a learning platform, and a place to share experiences and best practice.

This year the theme for the conference is Global Outreach: Enabling Cultures and Diversity in Research Management and Administration.

This theme reflects the growing need and ambition to reach out and get connected and work together globally. Cooperating not only in the field of scientific research & innovation and higher education but also in the field of research management and administration.

Open Innovation 2.0 Conference 2015

The European Commission, is organising the 2015 Open Innovation Conference.
Like the previous editions, the conference will be organised by the European Commission, DG Connect Open Innovation Group (OISPG) together with Intel Labs Europe, Kindly supported by Aalto University, City of Espoo and other partners.

The OI2 Conference will be hold from the 07th until the 09th of June 2015 in Espoo (Aalto University Campus), Finland.
The conference will discuss the implementation of the Dublin Declaration and topics such as student entrepreneurship, open innovation digital platforms, regional information modelling and digitalized services.

The recently published High Level Group report on European Innovation Ecosystems will also be a basis for discussions at the event.

A New Start for Europe – Opening Up to an ERA of Innovation

A conference to discuss EU policies on Open Science, the European Research Area and Innovation is due to take place on 22-23 June 2015.

Organised by the European Commission in Brussels, the conference is expected to bring together 500 participants to discuss a broad range of issues, including:

  • the results and outcome of the ‘Science 2.0: Science in Transition’ consultation;
  • the European Research Area Roadmap;
  • open labour market for researchers;
  • building up an innovation ecosystem;
  • future markets.

The Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, will also be present at the event.

Humanities opportunities in Europe – invitation

An event highlighting European funding opportunities specifically targeted at Arts and Humanities Researchers, led by the UK National Contact Points in conjunction with the Arts and Humanities Council (AHRC).

Talks will be presented on these areas:

  • Introduction to Arts and Humanities funding opportunities in Europe (AHRC)
    An overview of international funding opportunities offered by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, including Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) and International Co-investigator.
  • Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MCSA)
    MCSA are part of the ‘Excellence’ Pillar within Horizon 2020 and support international and inter-sectoral mobility of researchers, with a strong focus on careers and skills development. They operate on a completely bottom-up basis, with no pre-defined priority areas and are open to Social Sciences and Humanities. There are MSCA grants for all stages of a researcher’s career, from PhD candidates to highly experienced researchers. Some of the schemes are aimed at individual researchers (Individual Fellowships). Others are aimed at institutions (ITN, RISE, COFUND).
  • European Research Council (ERC) funding
    The ERC is part of Horizon 2020 and aims to stimulate research excellence by supporting and encouraging the very best, truly creative scientists from all areas, including SHH. ERC grants support individual researchers of any nationality and age who wish to pursue their frontier research. In their ERC grants, researchers are encouraged to go beyond established frontiers of knowledge and the boundaries of disciplines.
  • Research Infrastructures (including e-infrastructures) (PDF, 252Kb)
    Research infrastructures are facilities, resources and services that are used by research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in their fields. Where relevant, they may be used beyond research, eg for education or public services. The Research Infrastructures Programme creates opportunities for research facilities and scientists to collaborate across disciplines and countries, as well as create platforms where science and industry can come together.
  • Social Sciences and Humanities embedded across H2020 (PDF, 789Kb)
    As a horizontal activity, social science and humanities research is fully integrated into each of the pillars of H2020 and each of the specific objectives with significant funding available but also as an essential element for the activities needed to enhance industrial leadership and to tackle each of the societal challenges.
  • Europe in a Changing World: Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies (PDF, 259Kb)
    Programme is structured as five separate calls and opportunities that aim to support projects that will give Europe a cutting edge or sufficient resilience in facing the current and future difficulties affecting its development.
  • Science with and for Society (PDF, 510Kb)Science with and for Society
    Science with and for Society activities are intended to build capacities and develop innovative ways of connecting science to society. It will make science more attractive (especially to young people), raising the appetite of society for science and innovation and open up further research and innovation activities.
  • Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation
    The ‘Spreading excellence and widening participation’ strand of Horizon 2020 aims to enhance competitiveness by engaging with those who could commit more towards the EU research and innovation effort.

SME Funding Event


Enterprise and Commercial Development  were joined yesterday by our UK Research Office (UKRO) representative Blazej Thomas and National Contact Point (NCP) for SME Innovation, Dr Jane Watkins as well as Mudlark owner Charles Hunter for an interactive session on European Funding and SME’s.

The all day event, sponsored by EUREKA and hosted by the External Projects Team was held in the Ashley Building, and was designed to stimulate discussion and debate on the routes to EU Horizon 2020 funding for SME’s and local organisations as well as providing insight to academics on funding opportunities within the programme. Over 50 attendees had the opportunity to listen to expert advice as well as question our speakers on the nuts and bolts of European funding.

MSCA ITN: Information and Proposal Writing Events

In its capacity as UK National Contact Point (NCP) for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, UKRO will be running two information and proposal writing events for the 2015 Innovative Training Network (ITN) scheme, for which the call is currently open.


The events aim to provide participants with an in-depth overview of the ITN scheme. Participants should gain a clear understanding of the proposal format and the key issues relating to planning, writing and submitting proposals. Events University of Manchester, Manchester, Thursday 16 October 2014 London, venue and date will be confirmed and announced shortly.   Participation in the events is free of charge and places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for the Manchester event is now open and can be found via the link below. Registration and information on the London event will be available and announced shortly. The 2015 ITN call opened on 2 September and has a deadline of 13 January 2015.

You are warmly invited to attend the launch of “Under One Roof” a partnership project on Social Enterprise led by Keele University in conjunction with Staffordshire University.  “Under One Roof” is one of six Social Enterprise Thematic Clusters funded via a Government initiative offered by UnLtd (https://unltd.org.uk/).This strategic launch event will connect key partners who are passionate about Social Enterprise and its role in Staffordshire. It will address the following questions:

  • What is the national picture for Social Enterprise?
  • How are we responding to Social Enterprise in Staffordshire?
  • How we can all collaborate and champion Social Enterprise across the county?
  • How can organisations connect and share knowledge to raise the profile of Social Enterprise in Staffordshire?

You can expect excellent plenary speakers, including Prof Nick Foskett Vice Chancellor from Keele University and Prof Michael Gunn Vice Chancellor from Staffordshire University as well as representatives from UnLtd, Prime and the YMCA.

The afternoon will offer Social Enterprise workshops as well as opportunities to meet new people and networking opportunities to shape the future of Social Enterprise in Staffordshire.

British Academy Visit to Staffordshire University

The British Academy provides funding for research in the humanities and social sciences. They have agreed to come to Staffordshire University to provide information on the variety of research funding opportunities they offer.

Delegates will learn more about the scheme requirements, success rates, what assessors look for and how best to present applications. Plus there will be some new funds opening in the next few months so this is a chance to find out about the new schemes.

This event is being held on Thursday 2 October 13:00-16:00 in LT114/116 Ashley Building, Leek Road, Stoke-on-Trent

Academics from a number of regional Universities will also be invited and a networking session will be held. Collaborative research projects are of great interest to funders, so this is a good opportunity to talk to other academics and find out how you can work together.  A member of staff from the British Academy will be on hand during the networking session to provide information on the viability of your project ideas.
