The UK Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship has published its events calendar for the 2013/14 academic year.Topics cover a variety of areas and include The Challenges of Working with International Postgraduate Students, Impact in Research, Research Ethics, and Using new technologies in delivering Research Skills and Professional Development Training.  Some are free to attend and the type of event varies from workshops, conferences to study trips.

Webinar: New Participant Portal for Horizon 2020, 9th September

The Participant Portal, the central web platform for the EC research and innovation funding, is improving its user-friendliness and functions for H2020 and this webinar will highlight its main features.

All the grant-related online exchanges of EC research and innovation funding are managed on the Participant Portal. To make the system as user-friendly as possible and to prepare it for Horizon 2020, the Commission seeks continuous advice from the actual users. The next meeting of an external user group is planned for Monday 9th September 2013 (3pm – 6pm UK time) in Brussels and at this meeting, discussion points will include:

  • The improved version of the Participant Portal for Horizon 2020
  • The approach for completely paperless management of Horizon 2020 grants
  • New online functions for the appointment and payment of experts
  • Improvements to the system of registering organisations

To allow maximum participation and input from a wide audience, this meeting will be webcast with a live stream. Additionally, a web forum will be used where questions and comments can be posted, either during or after the meeting.

Visit from The Leverhulme Trust – save the date

 

Jean Cater, Assistant Director of The Leverhulme Trust will be visiting Staffordshire University on Wednesday 25th September to give a presentation to colleagues about funding opportunities with the Trust and the application process. There will be a Q&A session and small group discussions with Jean, following the presentation.

The event will take place in Court Room 2 in the Law School and will commence at 2.00pm.

LEP Challenge Sessions

You may have seen a previous blog about the Stoke on Trent & Staffordshire LEP area being given an indicative allocation of €161.6m for the next EU funding phase 2014 – 2020.  This allocation is to cover ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), ESF (European Social Fund) and EAFRD (European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development) priorities. Over the next few weeks the LEP is running a series of stakeholder challenge sessions to explore and define key elements to be included in their preparing a European Structural and Investment Fund Strategy, which will plan for how the €161.6m will be spent here in Staffordshire.

The following sessions have been arranged to date:

  • Sectors & Innovation – Friday 9th August, 9:30 am Keele Sustainability Hub
  • Inward Investment – Friday 16th August, 2:00 pm Staffordshire place 1
  • Skills – Monday 9th September, 9:30 am Rodbaston College
  • Quality of Life / Sites & Infrastructure – Wednesday 11th September, 2:00 pm CoRE

Reduced rate for EU funding training

The External Projects Team have been offered two places for a Moderngov training session on accessing European funding.  The session will be held in London on 9th July. University attends the 5th University Business Forum, Brussels

On 4th and 5th June the European Commission hosted the 5th  University Business Forum.  Over 300 registered delegates from across the EU listened to a number of high profile speakers including Jan Truszczyński, Director General of DG EAC and Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.  From the UK perspective Sir Tim Wilson, author of A Review of Business–University Collaboration, February 2012 (click here to view) also gave a key note which was well received by the audience.

The role of University Business collaborations for growth was central to discussions.  The Commissioner highlighted the importance of University Business collaborations to address the challenges of high the levels of youth unemployment and an increasing skills gap facing Europe today.  Successful initiatives evolving from previous forums were also presented, including details of the Knowledge Alliance funding calls and the “Guiding Framework for Entrepreneurial Universities”; an online self assessment tool developed in cooperation with the OCED.

Staffordshire University’s Catherine Fehily also presented at one of the workshops ‘Design – a vital part of Innovation’, providing an overview of the excellent staff-student enterprise activity that FACT has achieved through Flux, High House and SPoTS atelier.  The Commission also paid for two of our FACT students to attend along with a handful of students to provide real time illustrations of the workshops to support the feedback process.

European Cyber Security Month: October 2013

October sees the start of the European Cyber Security month (ECSM).

Public and private sector organisations in the area of Network and Information Security are invited to get involved. This year’s programme will be based around the EU Cyber Security Strategy.

The event aims to promote public awareness of cyber security issues and to provide up to date security information through education, good practice example and competitions. Activities will take place throughout October all over Europe.

The call for expressions of interest is now open and the organisers want to hear about activities planned in member states – social media campaigns, news articles, student fairs, road-shows, information sessions by Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs), round-table discussion sesions etc.

The biggest ICT event in Europe: ICT 2013 – Create, Connect, Grow in Vilnius on 6-8 November, 2013

More than 4000 researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, industry representatives, young people and politicians are expected in Vilnius.

The “ICT 2013 – Create, Connect & Grow” event combines a conference, an exhibition, networking sessions, an investment forum and activities for students and young researchers.

The conference will address a range of issues across the ICT sector varying from cloud computing, broadband and ICT infrastructures to ICT skills, cyber security and long term visions on the future.

The plenary sessions are organised thematically:
