UnLTD Social Enterprise Awards – Small Funds Avaliable to Students & Staff

Staffordshire University have recieved a small allocation of money from the HEFCE supported UnLTD Social Enterprise awards scheme which has been matched with HEIF (Higher Education Innovation Funding) which is managed by Enterprise and Commercial Development. This small awards scheme aims to facilitate students or staff in trying new ideas that have or create social value, this can be an idea about starting a social enterprise venture, to supporting social enterprises that are already in existence.The awards start at up to £500 and dependent on your idea there may be additonal money you can access. Applcations will be accepted up until the 31st July 2014. In terms of the application process, there is a short application form to fill in, you will be required to keep reciepts and meet with us to ensure you are on track.

SEWM networking event

Staffordshire University hosted our annual Social Enterprise West Midlands (SEWM)event yesterday in the Ashley Building. Melanie Mills SEWM Director (pictured first left) Jose Beech from ECD and Nic Gratton from FACT hosted over 22 Social enterprise’s from across the region who gathered to share knowledge and contacts. SEWM is itself a social enterprise and Staffordshire University work in partnerhsip to champion the role of social enterprise within Staffordshire and beyond.

SU students Win National Social Enterprise Award

Spitalfields market in London was home to 15 pop up shops this week as UK HEI’s competed over 2 days to win one of four National UnLTD Social Enterprise awards.

Funded by a Staffordshire University Social Enterprise UnLTD “try it” award three of our students travelled to London to set up a pop up shop.Congratulations go to Staffordshire University students; Andy Evans, Christina Turnock and Amy Pass (see pic below), who won a UnLTD Digital Marketing Award, selling a variety of products, including tea cups and saucers and sketch books, our students wowed the judges with their digital marketing campaign.

The prize is a day in London with marketing company “Born Social” to explore a digital marketing strategy as well as developing a on going mentoring relationship. Brilliant news and a great opportunity for our enterprising students to develop their skills.

2014 Fast Forward Competition opens

Entries for a competition to turn innovative ideas into reality have opened for eligible universities and research establishments. As part of the 2014 Fast Forward competition they are now able to compete for a pot of the £750,000 funding available.

The closing date for entries in the competition (electronic and paper) is Friday 13 December 2013.

Since 2010, the competition has provided £2 million worth of funding and inspired 35 innovative UK projects.

Universities and public sector research establishments are encouraged to work collaboratively with businesses and local communities on projects that best use innovation and Intellectual Property (IP). Last year’s projects were in the areas of healthcare and social enterprises, clean technology construction and aerospace.

• Bloodhound@University project which is involved in the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC) world land speed record project. Based at the University of the West of England, Bloodhound@University secured £80,000 in funding.

• ITALIA project from Buckinghamshire New University. The project was awarded £70,000 to bring together a variety of medical experts, university academics and Buckinghamshire County Council to develop new telehealth solutions to connect patients and doctors
