Top things to pack for University

So you have gotten your place at university and have sorted your accommodation out and it’s finally starting to sink in…you’re going to uni! First of all, congratulations! Now, it’s time to think of what things to bring with you to uni (whether you are living in halls or student accommodation). The following are a few things that I personally think are essential to take with you.

  1. Kitchen items

This is pretty self explanatory, especially if you’re living somewhere that is self-catered. You need to feed yourself, so it’s important to bring some kitchen equipment with you. Personally, I think pans, plates, cups and cutlery are key. Also, try and bring some basic food supplies such as sugar, salt, tea or cereal. During Welcome Week you may be too busy getting used to the uni life to do some food shopping, so there’s no harm in packing some supplies with you. Personally, I would wait until you arrive at your accommodation to get things such as a kettle or toaster, as this is something you and your flatmates can invest in if they have not been supplied already.

  1. Bedding

Most accommodation places do not offer bedding, so it’s best to bring your own. I would pack pillows, duvets, and bed sheets so that you can have a comfortable sleep! I also brought a mattress topper as an added comfort, but this is not really essential.

  1. Clothes

Yeah, this is probably silly, but clothes! Try not to bring too much because you can always go back home and get more clothes (unless you live hours away, then bring enough). I’d try and pack clothes that you can style again and again, so basic tops, jeans, jackets and shoes are great. Also, bring enough underwear!

  1. Bathroom items

This includes your toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, shampoo, razors and makeup! Pretty self-explanatory really.

  1. Stationary

Basic things such as notebooks, pens, pencils, a calculator and highlighters are a good idea. If you have a laptop or a PC, remember to pack that too! It might be a good idea to bring your own printer, but I personally didn’t and printing at the uni is quite cheap!

  1. Emergency items

I personally think it’s a good idea to have an emergency stash of certain things such as painkillers (for the killer headaches and hangovers) and cold or flu remedies. Also, have a plaster at hand in case you ever have a drunken accident! One more thing, contraception! I’m just saying…

I am sure that all these things I have mentioned are quite obvious, but I personally know that I took so much rubbish to uni that I didn’t need. So I hope this helps you, if not I am sorry. Try not to spend too much money on the things you are taking to uni but rather save it! Happy packing!
