Getting up to Speed on European Funding

Book your place on Staffordshire University’s annual workshop, Getting up to Speed on European Funding.

Special guest, Eevi Laukkanen, will be coming to Staffordshire University on 11 December 2013. Eevi is from UKRO in Brussels and will be talking about the new European funding streams being launched in January 2014.

The event will be held in LT113 Ashley. There are three open sessions which staff are invited to book on onto:

West Midlands Production Fund

This fund is not really research, but may be of interest to some of the film and TV production academics as it supports the production of feature films of all genres including documentaries and animation; and TV drama series, serials and one offs with a slot length longer than 30 minutes.

It is specifically focused on productions in the West midlands

 

Funding Body: Creative England

Scheme: West Midlands Production Fund

Overview: Fund which invests in the production of feature films and high-end TV drama from companies based in the West Midlands as well as from producers looking to establish a base and film in the region.

Budget: They are planning to support between four and five productions over the next 18 months, with investments of up to £500,000 per project.

Funding: Use ICT to improve the Learner Experience

JISC are looking to fund projects that will use new technologies to improve the learning experience for students. Following a change to its funding, this is the first call JISC has launched in a long time. The University has had considerable success with JISC funding in the past, and their schemes suit the universities strongly student orientated approach.

Funding Body: JISC

Scheme: Innovation through technology funding call

Overview: Jisc is starting a new million pound funding programme to improve the learner experience and increase the capability and capacity of the workforce across further education and skills providers. Money will be awarded to projects which encourage, support and promote innovation within the sector.

They are looking to fund innovative projects to:

  • Integrate new technologies in learning and teaching, assessment and business activities
  • Overcome barriers to the adoption and use of technology in the sector
  • Develop new uses for technology or innovative adaption and rollout of technologies.

The sorts of things they are looking to fund include:

  • Creating resources, tools or products
  • Developing organisational and collaborative processes using digital technologies
  • Developing apps
  • Creating augmented reality resources
  • Improving or adapting current technologies and resources (some already available through Jorum)
  • Developing new uses for technologies

Budget: £5,000 to £100,000 depending upon the scale of the project and numbers of providers involved in the areas outlined above.

Deadlines: Deadline for submissions is Friday 6 December 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Fund a One Year Partnership with China

This exchange fund from the British Academy will be of interest to academics working in humanities and social sciences and looking to develop a programme of work in China. The deadline is in February, so this leaves plenty of time to work up links with a Chinese partner.

Funding Body: British Academy

Scheme: International partnership and mobility scheme – UK-China one-year partnerships

Overview: The aim of this scheme is to support the development of partnerships between the UK and China, strengthening research excellence through new, innovative initiatives and links.

The scheme intends to strengthen research capacity and capability, with both partners gaining from the collaboration, and to initiate the development of long-term, vigorous links between the UK and Chinese scholars whilst also encouraging an intra-regional exchange of expertise and knowledge sharing. Awards cover any branch of the humanities or social sciences and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest. Workshops and seminars should form an integral part of the research programme. Partnerships including a training element and involving early-career scholars will be looked on favourably.

Both applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status and based at a research-active institution.

Budget: Funding is worth up to £10,000 for one year

Travel Funding for US, Brazil, Mexico,Thailand and more

British Council has funding for Early Career Researchers to travel to nineteen countries across the world for up to three months. This is part of the British Council Research Links Scheme. Funding can also include a partner country visiting the UK.

Different countries have different priority areas and these can be found in the guidelines. If no priority areas are specified, all research areas are covered.

The countries involved at this stage are; Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Morocco, Egypt, Qatar, South Africa, Nigeria, Russia (Humanities and Social Sciences only), Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam and Bangladesh. For this call placements involving the United States are also eligible, in specific areas which focus on using the humanities and social sciences in an interdisciplinary environment.

Horizon 2020 Condensed Factsheet

A new factsheet outlining the new European Research Programmes –Horizon 2020 has been launched by UKRO today.

The factsheet nicely condenses the programme to show what research areas will be covered by the funding, who should apply and what is funded.

The External Projects Team will be getting out lots of information on the new programme over the coming weeks in preparation for the launch in January 2014.  This document provides a good starting point to give an overview of the new scheme.

Getting up to Speed on European Funding

The new funds include:

Horizon 2020 is the EU funding programme for research and innovation. The official start for the programme is 1 January 2014. There are opportunities for individual researchers and groups of researchers to apply for funding.

Erasmus+ consolidates education and vocational training schemes into one programme, with the addition of Sport. Erasmus+ will replace the Lifelong Learning Programme, Youth in Action, Erasmus Mundus, ALFA III, TEMPUS EDULINK in one over-arching scheme.

The Universities External Projects Team will be hosting the event in the Ashley Building Stoke. We do not have full details of the schedule yet, but for now we would like you to save the date in your diary.

Sneak Preview of the 2014 Erasmus+ Work Programme

The External Projects Team has access to a draft work programme for the new Erasmus+ Project. This is European funding for education, vocational education and young people.
The official document is expected to come out in January 2014, with call deadline dates shortly after. Reading the draft programme can give staff the opportunity to get ahead of the game and start planning partnerships.
The programme covers one year of funding. It gives an overview of the Erasmus+ programme, particularly the specific objectives in education and training, youth and sport as well as in:
•    Key action 1 (learning mobility of individuals)
•    Key action 2 (co-operation for innovation and the exchange of good practices)
•    Key action 3 (support for policy reform)
•    Jean Monnet activities
•    Sport

The draft work programme gives an overview of the funding allocations for 2014-2020 as well as a detailed budget for the 2014 calls.

The draft work programme also lists the topics of the specific activities, outlining an overview of the topic, the expected results, eligible applicants, award criteria and budget distribution per sector for 2014.
