RCUK seeks public engagement stories

Research Councils UK has called for case studies that demonstrate the benefits and impact of public engagement to institutions, researchers and their research.

Suitable stories include those on skills development, career enhancement, new collaborations and partnerships and increasing awareness of the value of research to UK society. http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/media/news/2013news/Pages/130805.aspx

Royal Society Industry Fellowships

The Royal Society, in collaboration with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council, Rolls-Royce and BP, invites applications for its industry fellowships.

This scheme is for academic scientists who want to work on a collaborative project with industry and for scientists in industry who want to work on a collaborative project with an academic organisation with a university department or a not-for-profit research organisation.

It aims to enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between those in industry and those in academia in the UK. It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between the two sectors in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development.

The scheme provides the applicant’s basic salary while on secondment. The employing organisation continue to pay national insurance and pension contributions. Research expenses may be claimed up to the value of £2,000 per year.

All natural sciences, including agriculture, mathematics, biotechnology, environmental research, medical and engineering sciences, are eligible. Projects at any stage from fundamental science to industrial innovation will be supported.

Applications involving spin-offs or small companies are encouraged.

Awards can be for any period up to two years full time or four years pro rata.

Call for Tenders: Training Packages for Health Professionals

The Executive Agency for Health and Consumers has published a call for tenders concerning training packages for health professionals to improve access and quality of health services for migrants and ethnic minorities, including the Roma.

The work to be prepared under this call for tender is to review, develop, test and evaluate training for health professionals in order to facilitate the access and improve the quality of health services for migrants and ethnic minorities such as the Roma in the European Union.

NIHR Health services and delivery commissioned workstream – organisation, quality and cost-effectiveness of psychiatric liaison services in acute settings

This Programme is concerned with the delivery of health services, looking at broader impact on healthcare use, working practice and quality of care as well as patient outcome.

New research is needed to understand better how liaison psychiatry services can operate within complex health and social care systems. A key focus is on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of care and appropriateness to patients.

The Department of Health’s National Institute for Health Research invites proposals for research on the organisation, quality and cost-effectiveness of psychiatric liaison services in acute settings. The purpose of this call is to fund research within five identified areas of need:

mapping services;
assessing quality, including patient experience;
evaluating cost-effectiveness of models of care;
examining team, workforce and organisation.

This call specifies a range of research gaps, ranging from evaluation of service models to qualitative research on patient experience. A core focus of this study is the cost-effectiveness of services. Note that there is some overlap across the identified areas of research need. Researchers may wish to put forward proposals which tackle more than one of these areas, perhaps in a phased programme of work, but would need to ensure that teams are staffed with range of expertise and sites to deliver learning on a national scale.

Society for Research into Higher Education Annual Research Awards

The Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) is an independent and self-supporting UK based international learned society concerned to advance understanding of higher education, especially through the insights, perspectives and knowledge offered by systematic research and scholarship.

As part of the Society’s programme of strategic initiatives aimed at sustaining research into higher education, the Society is offering a series of annual research awards. These awards are funded entirely by the Society, and intended to support new research into higher education.

The Society is offering:

Up to four awards annually of £10,000 each for research focused on any aspect of higher education submitted under three overarching themes: Higher Education Policy, Higher Education and Society, and Higher Education Practice.These Awards are only open to individual members of the Society at the date of application and thus are part of the benefits of membership. Where a proposal is submitted by a research group or team, the lead proposer must be an individual member of the Society. Two to four scoping awards annually of £5,000 each for the exploration of any new or emerging area of higher education research leading to the development of a plan for further research.These awards are open to all and applications are welcome from members and non members of the Society. ESRC and ACCA sign a joint agreement

A Memorandum of Concordat (MoC) has been signed by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

The two organisations have worked in partnership over several years on a number of initiatives – such as diversity, pensions, social responsible investment and climate change and now the strategic agreement seals the relationship.

The concordat will be three years, from 1st of April 2013 to 31st of March 2016. To support the delivery of the Concordat, each organisation will make a sum of £50,000 available, annually. This will be used, by mutual agreement, to sponsor joint initiatives, provide research grant funding, and internship programmes, as well as other activities, under the terms and spirit of the Concordat.

Manufacturing with light

The EPSRC invites participants for its manufacturing with light call. This aims to encourage adventurous research ideas to explore how to generate, collect, manipulate, control and transmit light to transform and shape the manufacturing industry.

Research ideas should have the potential to revolutionise production processes or develop new and profound technological applications, where a consideration of the pathway to manufacture is necessary.

The proposed research should endeavour to bring the physics, materials, engineering and manufacturing research communities closer together and to support the device development community. Some examples of innovative areas that fall within the scope of the call are:

non-traditional uses of light in manufacturing processes or technologies;
developing new sources of light that are applicable to manufacturing;
manufacturing with light outside traditional spectral range;
innovative interactions between materials and light;
novel metrology and inspection concepts that exploit the properties and characteristics of light;
manufacturing with photons;
new manufacturing technology for production of devices;
manufacturing applications of quantum physics or quantum devices;
quantum physics or laser science for new manufacturing processes;
new applications that arise from wavelength-tuning of light sources, for example, biological and medical applications.

Higher education institutions and some research council institutes and independent research organisations are eligible to apply.

The budget is up to £3 million. Grants should not exceed £300,000 and a duration of 18 months.

L’Oréal UK and Ireland fellowships for women in science

L’Oréal UK and Ireland invites proposals for its fellowships for women In science. These are tenable at any UK or Irish university or research institute over a 12-month period, and cover research in the life or physical sciences. Computer science, engineering, mathematics, psychology, science education and social sciences are not eligible for this fellowship.

Candidates must: be female postdoctoral researchers with no more than 10 years’ active full-time postdoctoral experience; be a citizen of the EEA or Switzerland, or have permanent residence status in the UK or Ireland; be residing in the UK or Ireland at the time of application.

The value of each fellowship is £15,000. The prize money may cover equipment, childcare or travel costs to an overseas conference. Four awards will be made.

The 2014 Fellowships will open on 1st February 2014 for applications.
