3 Reasons Why Work Experience Is Important

Whether you’re currently at school or at university, you might hear the words ‘work experience’ quite a lot. Believe me, it’s not just a couple of weeks working somewhere to waste your time, but it can actually be really valuable for your future (and your CV). As part of my courses and many courses here at Staffordshire University, you will be given the opportunity to partake in some work experience, ranging from 4 weeks to even 1 year. This might sound really scary, which it can be, but if you really find somewhere great to work it can really help you in the future. I say this as I have recently come back from a 2-week work experience placement in Amsterdam, working with a small midwifery practice. So why is it even that important?

1. It will help you find a job in the future

This is really true. Most, if not all employers are looking for people who have the skills and experience in the world of work. It’s great and all having a good degree, but if you haven’t worked or volunteered in a professional setting, then this could make it harder for you to find a job. Finding work experience in the field you want to work in will really look good on your CV and put you in the good light.

2. It will establish whether you really want to work in that field

Work experience will help you to decide whether that area of work is somewhere you see yourself working in the future. By observing and working alongside professionals, you can speak to them and ask them questions about their jobs. All this will help you when choosing your future career or potential place to work

3. It will provide you contacts for the future

You will have the opportunity to meet and build relationships with professionals in a potential place of work. This will put you in an advantageous position if you are applying for a job in your chosen place for work experience. If people remember you from when you spent time working for them and you made a positive impression, then this will put you in a good position for the future.

I really hope that through reading this that you’ll understand the relevance and importance of work experience. Staffordshire University really helps provide students with opportunities to gain new skills and experience, so I would really urge you to take them up!

Hi! I'm a 3rd year Midwifery student, and in my spare time you'll usually find me reading, listening to music or buying things I don't need! When I graduate I'm looking forward to becoming a registered as a professional at 21, and making a difference. I’m #ProudToBeStaffs because the university is friendly and has a real community feel.
