How Blogging Can Help You Through Uni

Having been a Student Blogger/ Digital Student Ambassador for Staffordshire University for nearly a year now, I can honestly say that it is one of the best decision I made to apply for the job. There are many aspects of the job which I feel have helped me through university.

As a psychology student my approach to answering the title question would be that writing is therapeutic. There has been lots of research into how writing can be used for people to express feelings and emotions through their writing but these don’t just have to be negative ones. I enjoy writing blogs because it helps me to look for the good in all situations. I write about the down sides too but when writing about an experience I have found I suddenly see good parts that I missed before.

Aside from being therapeutic, writing blogs is lots of fun and fun is important for enjoying university. I enjoy thinking about a blog I could write when I am in a particular situation. I also love writing blogs which I think will help someone who is, or might be, in the same situation as me. Blogging has also encouraged me to do things that I may not have otherwise done. A few times I have gone to events or to restaurants so that I could include it in my blog and share my experience with others. It is a big bonus having the freedom to choose a lot of the blog topics and write what I think other students will want to read about.

Another way that blogging gets you through university is giving you an outlet from all the revision and assignments. Certainly for psychology, and I assume for other subjects, writing an essay is very time consuming because there is lots of research and referencing and triple checking your information and on top of that remembering that it has to sound like an academic piece of work and not a story. When writing a blog it is so different. Blogging is one of the only times that I can just sit down at my computer and type as the words come into my head. I don’t need to research or reference because all the information is already in my head and I can just let it out. It is the most wonderful feeling.
