Food Shopping: The Smart (App) Way

Hello!

Now, summer may be just around the corner and I can see the relief on the faces of all you poor souls who have completed those pesky yet vital exams! You’ve more than earned the summer off!

I bring good news!

Have you heard of these new supermarket cashback apps that have been flooding our app stores on our phones for the last few months? These very same apps that promise you cashback on food items that you’ve brought in stores?

Sounds too good to be true, huh?

Well, that is why I, Jaspreet Singh… took on the challenge to try these new apps over a period of two months to see if they REALLY do work and more importantly HOW do they work.

First things first, you have to bear in mind that each app is different, however for the purpose of this blog, I will compare TWO cashback apps that I’ve personally used and found to be fantastic. These apps are Shopmium and CheckoutSmart. You can find apps in the Google Play Store and Apple Store.

These apps while great to use, do have their limitations. You cannot claim cashback on every item you’ve bought at the supermarket, however, you can claim cashback on every item you’ve brought as listed on the apps themselves. For example, if I wanted to treat myself and saw on the app, that I could get 50p cashback on a Pot Noodle (don’t judge me), then I would go ahead and buy myself a Pot Noodle at whatever price they have at the store, get the receipt and then simply take a photo of the receipt and claim my 50p cashback. The money itself will be deposited to your PayPal account within hours.

Now I must admit, 50p may not sound a lot, but the more items you buy using it’s ever expanding catalogue… the more you save. These apps are designed not only to save you money but to expand your taste palate to exotic food that you’d not usually consider without it affecting your budget.

I have personally found that while both apps are relatively easy to use, CheckoutSmart has a wider list of offers, including FREE chocolate which is fantastic.

By having used both Shopmium and CheckoutSmart, I was astounded at how quickly I was saving money while doing my weekly food shop. I must admit, at the start I was rather skeptical, but once I started noticing an extra ten pounds in my bank at the end of the week… I knew that this was truly the way to go.  I have been using these cashbacks apps for just over two months now and I can safely say that I have saved just under £100, which for a university student as myself can go a long way.

Shopmium also has this fantastic offer at the moment, where if you sign up using my referral code KFHCCMYR you can nab yourself a FREE box of Cornetto Ice Cream!

For a student, these apps are a godsend and I can’t highly recommend them enough to you all. It is well worth a try, and even if you are only going to use it once or twice,  you’d be surprised at how much you can save without really trying.

Peace.
