Healthy Body and Healthy Mind

So the gym. Yup I did it! Sign and sealed as of today. I am a full paid member of Staffordshire University’s Sir Stanley Mathews Gym. To be honest I have being saying I will for…erm….well let’s just a while. I take prospective students in all the time as part of tours and I am wowed at the facilities so it does make sense to join. At least then I can have real life experience when I am talking to people.

After joining I did a proper induction with one of the instructors there. I was shown all the equipment in working order, but due to my ‘inappropriate footwear’, he had to go on the machines. However, the laughs were turned on me when he booked me for a proper weight and fitness check, where a tailor made exercise plan will be made for me.

All the equipment is made by Matrix, and is pretty state of the art. The gym had a major refurbishment about 12 months ago with tens of thousands of pounds spent upon it.  And I don’t think people; myself included expect it to be quite as big as it actually is inside. As well as the gym, there is a huge sports hall, and separate rooms for classes.

Classes are included in the gym membership. And for a student for 12 months its only £120*! I enjoy doing the classes, and I might even drag a few mates too them. Different classes run at different times on different days. So there is no excused really to not have a class convenient to you, that you will enjoy. The gym can be used by the public too, so it’s another great way to meet new people.

One of the things that put me off for so long is that I don’t have a ‘gym body’, but isn’t that more of a reason to join – so I can get one? All I can say is that the lads and girls that work there are lovely, and have supported and gently pushed me into joining. It was the two personal training sessions free per month with your membership that finally twisted my arm.

The lockers at the gym are currently under refurbishment, but the changing rooms have been done. There are showers and hair dryers, but dint forget your straighteners and makeup! These aren’t provided. As most of you now know, I am a Stoke supporter and home grown potteries lassie, so I am happy to be a part of the Sir Stanley Mathews gym.

Joining the gym can be a great way to not only get fit, but to meet new people with similar interests as yourself. So don’t put it off! Well, that’s me at deaths door for next 12 months, so if you see me, please pass me water and not caffeine. My goal is to do the Potters ’alf and the full one next year, so watch this space. And as the banner does say ‘healthy body, healthy mind’ is coming my way.

Staff and student gym offer: £120 per year* and no joining fee (*offer available to staff and students only until 31 October 2016). Call 01782 294 124 to arrange a tour of the facilities
