Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

‘‘If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.’’ – Nora Roberts

There comes a time in your life where you have to make a decision that’ll change your life for the better… for the past month or so I have been put in that very position to make an important decision in my life.

For the past year or so, I had been studying Radio Production at the university and while I truly enjoyed the course and made a few friends that I can happily call my best friends, I had eventually come to the decision that I needed to concentrate on the very abilities that define me from anybody else. In my mind, I always knew I enjoyed the production elements of radio, whether it would be editing a piece of audio, writing and producing a radio drama or even pre-planning my live show on OMG, however it wasn’t until the start of the second semester I eventually came to the conclusion that I needed to pursue that dream of producing and editing to be able to sharpen those skills and in some ways, surpass myself into working sound in other mediums other than radio, whether that would be designing sound effects for a video game, becoming a Foley artist in upcoming films and TV shows or even composing music on my MIDI keyboard for TV and film.

This is when I decided to make the move of transferring over to Sound Design. With anything in life, it is important to be brave and not let your fears take control of you when making important decision in life. I believed that it was too late for me transfer from one course to another, especially at this stage in my degree however, as quoted above ‘‘If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.’’

Don’t be afraid to ask. The university will always help where they can and if they can’t, they will always point you in the right direction. For the past year and a half, I am so lucky to have been able to gain the support of so many people from across the university and I am glad to have this reassurance.

There is always someone that is willing to listen and in most cases, be willing to help you.

Until the next time.

Peace.

I’m Jaz! You’ve arrived at my blog about life through a 22-year old’s eyes. I’ve chosen Staffs to take the first steps for my career within the radio industry and hope it will lead me to being a sound designer and produce Radio Dramas/Documentaries for the BBC! I love drinking copious amounts of green tea and watching classic Doctor Who episodes. I’m #ProudToBeStaffs because of the amount of banter! Students – listen up - get involved with as much as you can. University tends to flyby when you are having fun.
