What to do on campus

LRV - Gobble/Eclipse

Staffs is absolutely packed with fun and facilities. From cosplay to clubbing, there’s something for everyone!

Fitness:

The gym I use is the university one in the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre and I can attest to how great it is. The staff are super-helpful and the facilities are phenomenal. There’s a great array, whether you want to do resistance training, cardio, or just build muscle – they have the works.

Entertainment:

Now, for entertainment. I’ve recently discovered a great radio show based here in Stoke, from the One Media Group (OMG). The segment I personally listen to is Culture Shock. It features hosts Josh, Lincoln and James running down the current relevant cultural news, discussing, debating and playing music. Their archive of shows can be accessed at www.ctsh.online and even features a Halloween special! Unfortunately the show has now been discontinued, but the archive is still available and some of the presenters are soon to launch a podcast.

For more fun, the Stoke campus has its very own film theatre. Here they regularly show the latest releases from both the indie world and Hollywood. I recently saw Mother! by Darren Arronofsky, which wasn’t playing in any other cinema in the area and they have also recently hosted A Ghost Story and Blade Runner 2049. In addition, for film fans and film students, Tom Chimiak hosts Film Wednesdays at 2:00pm every Wednesday, where a film is screened, depending on vote. It’s great fun both seeing the movies and how passionate people get about their chosen films. Tom recently put on a double feature of Scooby Doo and Spirited Away to appeal to a tie, so as you can tell, great fun.

Nightlife:

In the evenings me and my friends love to go to the Ember Lounge, the local university bar. It has a great atmosphere and is always full of people from film and other creative courses.  As well as this, on Tuesdays Ember hosts a karaoke night, which is always to die for. We haven’t missed one and it’s been great every time. You get some amazing singing voices as well as some wonderfully wacky song choices. It’s the perfect nightcap to an evening.

But if you feel like staying out even later, there are great clubs on the university campus. Gobble runs every Wednesday and Eclipse every Friday in the Leek Road Venue (LRV). Gobble has your cheesier, 80s to 2000s hits while Eclipse is more of a contemporary club night, and both are recommended.
