Relationships

“Relationships in University never last”

Students sitting together on the grass on College RoadI’ve lost count of the amount of times I have heard that from different people. I recall in first year that many people including some of my flat mates came into university in relationships and most of them had broken up with their significant others by the end of the year, mainly due to cheating. Yes that quote can be applied to a handful of people, however do not let a few broken relationships lead you to believe that you and your partner can not make it through.

I have a friend who has been with his girlfriend for many years and she is currently in a different country and they are still going strong which is proof that if you really love your partner, nothing can hold you back.

Relationships formed in university can also prosper if you really like each other, although you may have to make sacrifices based on what you had planned to do once you leave university but don’t let that discourage you. For those of you in long distance relationships due to university or for those of you currently in a university formed relationship, here are some helpful tips to keep your love alive.

LONG DISTANCE:

– Skype/FaceTime: These were created for a reason, talk to your partner as often as you can on these platforms, although you may not be able to see them in person you can always use Skype or FaceTime to keep in contact and still physically see one other.

Planning- Make time to see one another based on the distance between your universities (if you’re both in university) or the distance between your university and their hometown. If you can’t travel down to them maybe they can come to you for a weekend or even for a day.

UNIVERSITY FORMED:

– Don’t Rush: Rushing or forcing a relationship especially in a university environment can end very badly so make sure to take your time and figure out what each person wants from the relationship. Get to know each other properly. Being in university together makes it easier to see each other very frequently and get to know each other in a short space of time which can make you believe to know someone better than you think.

-Privacy: Not everything about your relationship needs to be known, especially depending on the type of friends you both have. Don’t allow them to get involved in your relationship as this can cause problems and influence decisions based on your friends and not on you and your partner.

I hope these few tips have been helpful and remember that any relationship can work out if you both believe that
