Big Lottery: funding event at Staffordshire University – February 5th

We are really pleased that Stephna Davis-Watts, Policy and Partnership Officer at the Big Lottery Fund is coming to the Ashley Centre, Stoke on February 5th.

1-00pm -4-30pm

Initially the Big lottery were reluctant to come to the University as they equated it entirely with research related work – we have persuaded them otherwise.

We have asked Stephna to make a presentation on the current opportunities for large project funding from the Big lottery and to discuss large project ideas with colleagues in the university and with  partner organisations.

We are inviting colleagues from across the university in areas of interest that the Big Lottery can fund; these include

  •  Low carbon
  • The Environment
  • Creative communities
  • Community engagement
  • Arts and creative technologies
  • Physical activity
  • Mental health
  • Public health
  • Social enterprise

The Big lottery is geared towards partnership funding – you could use the event to scope out a project idea with a group of partners –with a Big lottery expert on hand –  if there are individuals you would like us to invite as well do let us know.

Horizon 2020 portal update

The Horizon Europa Website Project Team have posted the following

‘Welcome to the new website with latest information on Calls, Grants and Funding as well as workshops and training to develop the skills necessary to be successful in winning those grants.

Just about everything is new from Logo to layout, plus a new 5000+ page EU programme database specially designed for researchers and advisors,

You may already have seen the Logo video, if you haven’t and you have a minute for a bit of fun watch it here

For existing members, profiles and subscriptions have been transferred, however you will need to log in and reset your password by following the ‘forgotten password’ link.

For non members the site has expanded dramatically, guides, newsletters and eventually videos and presentations are accessible by registering for “Free stuff!”

Funding for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Growth research

Grants for innovation, entrepreneurship and growth experiments

Nesta have launched a call for proposals for “experimental research that provides evidence on the best approaches to increase innovation, support high-growth entrepreneurship and accelerate business growth”.  

The scheme is looking to fund a range of approaches through randomized control trials. Example activities provided include models of technology transfer from universities, different approaches to managing and stimulating innovation, networks and collaboration, open innovation, innovative procurement, amongst others.  The call documents highlight economic and social entrepreneurship and return on investment will be supported.

Given our University research and HEIF expertise we expect a lot of interest in this call so please contact externalprojects@staffs.ac.uk if you are interested to ensure we have a coordinated approach.

Funding for travel to commonwealth countries

The Association of Commonwealth Universities Early Career Academic Grants Scheme is now open.

As a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Staffordshire University is able to apply for Early Career Academic Grants for conference or meeting attendance. The grants are for up to £2000 for early career researchers to travel abroad and build research connections.  This Association of Commonwealth Universities scheme have 100 grants available, applications are to be received by 7th February.

Creative Europe Funding to Launch in January

With all the talk about Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020, it is easy to forget that the European Commission is also launching the Creative Europe Programme this January. Creative Europe will provide €1.46 billion over seven years to strengthen Europe’s cultural and creative sectors

What does it support?

  • Cross-border cooperation projects between cultural and creative organisations within the EU and beyond.
  • Networks helping the cultural and creative sectors to operate transnationally and to strengthen their competitiveness.
  • Translation and promotion of literary works across EU markets.
  • Platforms of cultural operators promoting emerging artists and stimulating a truly European programming of cultural and artistic works.
  • Capacity building and professional training for audiovisual professionals.
  • Development of fiction, animations, creative documentaries and video games for European cinema, television markets and other platforms.
  • Distribution and sales of audiovisual works in and outside Europe.
  • Film festivals that promote European films.
  • Funds for the international co-production of films.
  • Audience development to foster film literacy and to raise interest in Europe’s films through a wide range of events

The commission has not yet announced how much match funding will be needed for these project. Traditionally it has been around 50%.

Horizon 2020 work programmes published by European Commission

The European Commission has started publishing drafts of some Horizon 2020 Work Programmes. These are now available on the official Horizon 2020 website.http://ec.europa.eu/research/horizon2020/index_en.cfm?pg=h2020-documents

Some draft Work Programmes for Horizon 2020 have now been made available by the European Commission. To date, these include the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, ICT, Access to Risk Finance, the ‘Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials’ societal challenge and the European Research Council.

The current drafts give information on the likely topics or actions for funding and the planned calls for proposals. Some indicate budgets and deadlines. For each topic, there are three sub-headings, the “Specific Challenge”, the “Scope” and the “Expected Impact”.

These are still drafts and changes can be made before the adoption of the final work programmes and their publication. The Commission is publishing these drafts to allow potential applicants to familiarise themselves with the main lines of funding planned ahead of the launch of the first calls, which is expected for 11 December 2013.

Calls will be published on the Commission’s Research Participant Portal, a new version of which is due to be launched in early December.

Over €400 billion agreed by the European Parliament

The European Parliament had a busy week last week approving over €400 billion support measures for regional development, research and innovation, lifelong learning, cultural and media European collaboration activities.  The legislative packages for the following programmes have now been agreed by the European Parliament for the 2014 – 2020 programme period:

Horizon 2020 – €70.2 billion for research and innovation (Draft Horizon 2020 work programmes are now available via the European Commission website at http://ec.europa.eu/research/horizon2020/index_en.cfm?pg=h2020-documents. )

Cohesion Policy – €325 billion for growth and job creation through European Regional Development Fund; the European Social Fund; the Cohesion Fund; the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development; and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. 

Erasmus+ – €14.7 billion for lifelong learning, focussing on student and staff mobility through strategic partnerships.

Creative Europe – €1.4 billion for supporting European culture, media and arts sectors
