The official launch of the Centre of Archaeology based at Staffordshire University took place on the 18th of December. The event was a huge success and was attended by a host of delegates from heritage organisations from across the UK including English Heritage, The Potteries Museum and Museum of London Archaeology. We were also pleased to welcome Councillor Sheila and Barry Pitt (the Mayor and Consort of Stoke on Trent) and delegates from Staffordshire and Derbyshire police.
Demonstration stalls covering the state-of-the-art equipment were extremely popular and a big thank you to all who helped set up and operate these including laser-scanning, GIS, 360 degree photography, Ground Penetrating Radar, crime scene photography, landscape survey and physical geography.
The event was well attended by University staff and the Centre is particularly grateful to Professor Michael Gunn, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Staffordshire University and Professor Hastings McKenzie, Head of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, for their opening addresses. These were followed by opening lectures by Dr Caroline Sturdy Colls and Kevin Colls. We are also grateful to our students Czelsie Weston, Laura Thomas, Iwan Witt and Amy Evans for their help during the event.
